If you are an American who does not carry dental insurance - you are not alone. A whopping 77 million adults in the US are currently living without dental coverage and are wondering who to turn to, just like you! According to the American Dental Association, cost is the number one reason people skip routine dental visits.

Everyday we see patients who think that if they are out of network, we cannot accommodate them. This is far from the truth! When you find yourself in need of dental care without insurance, you must remember that having no insurance does not prevent you from receiving professional dental care. Some dentists exclusively treat patients without insurance, while others offer discount and membership plans to make dental care more affordable.

Here are some of your options for visiting a dentist near you if you are one of the many who do not carry dental insurance:

1. YOU CAN PURCHASE DENTAL INSURANCE!

One popular option for people without coverage is to purchase a dental insurance policy from the government's online marketplace. While this approach may be popular, it can easily become a waste of funds if you are not careful in your selection. It is crucially important that you choose a plan that compliments your needs before locking into a policy. For example, if you need cosmetic dentistry - find a policy that focuses on the coverage of those kinds of services.

Even when you purchase a dental plan, it can make finding a dentist more difficult since it often limits the number of providers who accept it. Please note that visiting a dentist without insurance can be more affordable than buying a policy with monthly premiums, if you are only visiting every 6 months for your cleaning.

2. PAY WITH CASH OR CARD FOR SERVICES!

Dental insurance is not required to see a dentist! Depending on your location, routine checkup rates will fall somewhere between $100 ~ $350 which includes the fees for your x-rays, examination, and the cleaning.

For many patients this option can be quite manageable, especially if you are taking good care of your dental health at home. This alternative is most feasible when you are keeping cavities at bay and only visiting the dentist for your routine cleanings every 6 months.

Paying out-of-pocket impacts your wallet most if you are in need of complex treatments like removing gum disease, fixing broken teeth, or killing the nerve of a dead tooth. While dentists reduce these costs with in-house memberships, patients can avoid needing these seemingly expensive treatments if they stay on top of routine checkups.

3. ENROLL IN A DENTAL MEMBERSHIP PLAN!

As mentioned above, many dentists provide an alternative option to insurance by offering a membership savings plan. Typically these are plans that will save a percentage on dental services in exchange for a small yearly fee.

For example, at SKYS Dental Art we are readily equipped to provide dental care without insurance. If you are paying out of pocket and need extensive work beyond a standard cleaning, we find it most beneficial to enroll in our membership plan. You can enroll either plan for a year after a one time payment of $159.00 or $250.00 which includes great benefits like:

  • FREE exams and x-rays all year long.

  • Add family members for $50 and $100 each.

  • Save 10-15% off ALL GENERAL SERVICES

  • Save 10-15% off MOST COSMETIC SERVICES

Keep in mind that most dental insurance companies do not cover any portion of cosmetic work. Depending on your needs, our membership plan could be an excellent route to take for you and your family's dental care!
