How to Get Dental Care with Medicare Advantage

Many people across the US are under the impression that dental coverage is naturally provided through Original Medicare, Parts A and B. But did you know that original Medicare does NOT cover any routine, preventative, or restorative services for your teeth unless it is a medical requirement?

This type of limited coverage can often be a cause for disappointment which is why we're so happy to share the benefits of enrolling in Medicare Advantage! (or Part C)

WHAT SERVICES ARE COVERED BY ORIGINAL MEDICARE?

Please note that original Medicare plans will only cover dental services in the event of a medical emergency. This coverage applies to a very narrow range of services which can include:

  • Oral examination before kidney transplant

  • Surgery for fractures of the jaw / face

  • Jaw reconstruction

  • Facial tumor removal

  • Oral exams before heart valve replacements

It is very important to understand that these benefits WILL NOT cover essential services for routine maintenance, or treatment needed to preserve your oral health which include:

  • Routine exams & cleanings

  • Fillings & extractions

  • Root canal treatments

  • Dentures, crowns, periodontics (etc.)

Again, Original Medicare DOES NOT cover these standard services required to maintain the best oral health. If you need follow-up care from a medical incident, you may be surprised that you are suddenly expected to pay for treatment out of pocket. For example, if you need a tooth extracted to perform surgery for a facial injury -- Medicare is likely to cover the extraction but will not cover any dental services needed in the future because that tooth has been removed.

HOW DO I GET DENTAL COVERAGE THROUGH MEDICARE?

If you are already eligible or receiving Original Medicare: you have the luxury to switch over to Part C during any open enrollment period at no cost!

These plans cover so many services that Parts A and B do not offer, including dental, vision and hearing expenses for eligible patients. In some cases this may include a slightly higher premium - BUT it's also very common for Part C plans to provide coverage with a $0 premium as well.

Plans with $0 premiums will cover basic services like routine exams, cleanings and fillings - while plans with a monthly premium will be useful in covering larger procedures which can include root canals, bridges, and IMPLANTS!

When enrolling for Medicare Advantage, Part C - it is very important you read the details of each plan to inform yourself on covered treatments and if your plan may include a monthly premium, or deductible. If you need extensive work, it could be beneficial to opt for a plan with a premium above $0.

Medicare Advantage Plans can be a true asset to continuing your dental care after reaching the age of retirement. We encourage you to make the switch if you are in need of dental maintenance, and give us a call for the next steps in your treatment!
